Details of Event
Caught in conveyor. Sixteen year old John Sagar, 1 Balure Crescent, Fallin, lost his life on Thursday in the Main Coal section of Nos 1 and 2 Pits, Polmaise Colliery, MilIhall. He was engaged as a drawer when his right arm was caught in the drum of the conveyor belt and he was drawn into the machine. Death was almost instantaneous. John, who was a full six footer and only son of Mr and Mrs Theodore Sagar, had been working underground for only a few weeks. He was trained at the Snab Centre, Bo'ness, where he gained the certificate for employment below ground. Known as a cheerful and obliging lad, John will be missed by a host of friends, including members of Fallin Church Youth Club. The funeral to Bannockburn Cemetery on Saturday forenoon was one of the largest seen for some time. About 50 beautiful wreaths accompanied the cortege and the many mourners included Mr Halliday, manager at Millhall; Mr Sam Ovens, manager of Nos 3 and 4 pits, Fallin and senior NCB officials. Rev Mr Cant, Fallin, conducted the grave side service. (Stirling Observer).
