- Details of Event
- A heavy fall of several hundred tons at the working face fastened and imprisoned them both. The boy lived about l6 hours and the man 20 hours; they were able to talk with the men trying to release them for 12 hours or so but succumbed before they were reached. Apparently a sudden squeeze, acting on weak roof between a "grime" and a "fault" caused the fall. There does not seem to be blame attached to anyone and I have pleasure in bearing testimony to the efficiency and courage displayed by all concerned, from the manager downwards, in the efforts made to rescue these poor fellows. They were worthy of the noble traditions of English colliers and miners with regard to such circumstances. 2 killed.
