- Details of Event
- Deceased was buried and suffocated by a fall of roof coal and dirt in a Thick coal opening 4 yards by 3 yards. The opening was only 6 feet high up to the "White coal," which left 3 feet of coal up to the black batt, 9 inches thick, above which was a soft measure, known as the "sheep skin," 2.5 feet in thickness up to the rock. Some little time before the accident the roof sounded rather drummy, but as the place was well timbered, it was considered safe; suddenly the roof collapsed, reeling cut several props, and the whole of the coal and dirt up to the rock fell before deceased could get clear.
