- Details of Event
- Deceased was employed to give attention to the boys who pick out small pieces of stone from amongst the coal on a canvas travelling belt 59 feet in length. Both sides of the belt were fenced along its entire length except 2 feet nearest the return wheel. This portion was left open to allow of small pieces of stone that had found a way on to the inside of the belt being taken out, as repeated journeys over the wheel damaged the belt. When this was done the belt was expected to be stopped. The deceased was in the act of attempting to remove a piece of stone while the belt was in motion, when his hand was drawn forward between the belt and wheel, and his arm was completely torn off between the elbow and shoulder. He died from shock and blood-poisoning on June 19th.
