- Details of Event
- Situated near the reservoir there is a "catch pit" 10 feet 4 inches deep, and 3 feet in diameter into which condensed steam and lubricating oil are conveyed from three separate engines. There is a drainpipe at the bottom through which the water and oil escape. In consequence of air excess of steam going into the "catch pit" the lid was lifted to ascertain from which pipe the excess was flowing. The assistant engineer was in charge. When the lid was lifted by him and a fitter the steam was so dense that it was impossible to see into the pit, and they withdrew for a short distance. At the moment the deceased, who had finished stoking was walking from the boilers to the water tap to fill his kettle, when owing to the steam he missed the tub track and fell into the pit. A ladder was quickly lowered, up which, in spite of a displaced knee-cap deceased climbed. He died next day in Hospital from shock following the scalds.
