The deceased were filling rubbish into trams when a journey of eight trams of rubbish ran back down the dip and killed them. The rider had left them two empty trams, and was taking the full journey up towards the pit, when it ran against a piece of timber lying on the road. The sudden check caused a link of the chain attaching the rope to the journey to open at a bad weld, and liberate the journey. The rider had neglected to attach a barhook. 2 killed.
