- Details of Event
- He was working at No.2, or upcast, shaft hanging-on, which is 126 yards above that at No.1 or downcast, shaft owing to a fault of that size running between the shafts. A can of hot water was sent to the shaft bottom which the deceased took to the stables a short distance away and on his way he had to pass through two doors. He arrived at the stables all right and left the can there but in returning he appears to have lost his light, and to have gone past the doors through a fence, into the airway from No.1 shaft and walked a distance of 80 yards, and then to have got over another fence and through an opening into the shaft and to have fallen to the bottom. He had only worked in the pit 10 days and probably did not know that he should not have gone past either of the fences.
