Leg fractured by the lash of the haulage rope when starting front a station where additional trams were added to the journey on its way to the shaft. It did not seem serious at first but there was a fracture which was not externally noticeable, and blood poisoning resulting, the leg was amputated. He died from blood poisoning on September 24th.
