He was employed at a water drawing shaft, and while the engine was running be was found severely injured and dead lying across the rocking shaft controlling the valves. The engine was a single cylinder vertical, and it appeared that the descending crosshead had struck him while he was scraping dirt from the top of one of the valve chests. He was 6 feet away from the levers controlling the engine.
