- Details of Event
- Deceased was driving a pony from the stable to the shaft, and towards a man who was sweeping dust off the balks. He got some dust in his eyes, but when he got home his wife on examination found he eye clean and did not see any puncture of the skin. Next day the eye was inflamed and swollen, and the day following a doctor was called in. On the 13th November the eyelid was lanced and the man sent to the Infirmary, where he died the same night from septicaemia. The coroner held an inquest on 16th November, when the doctor who had made a post-mortem examination stated that death was due to septicaemia, probably from infection from the left eye. The jury found that death was due to septicaemia caused by getting dust in his eyes while at work.
