Whilst on his way to the pit bottom he was seen to step into a refuge hole to allow a set of tubs to pass. The tubs were, then 12 yards from him, and travelling two-and-half miles an-hour. He must have come out of the refuge hole in an absent minded moment, for lie was run over by the tubs and killed.
