- Details of Event
- Deceased had been instructed to start work alone on the Sunday night shift in a coal heading situated in another deputy's district and about 200 yards distant from his usual working place. At the inspection station he passed the deputy into whose district he was going but did not inform him of the change, neither did his own deputy say anything. Deceased went to the heading and took off his clothes, and having obtained permission, went through a short fenced airway between the two districts to his usual working place to fetch his tools. When returning he took a wrong turning and went through a fence in a disused gate road, evidently mistaking this fence for that in the airway. When he had gone a few yards past the fence his light appeared to have been extinguished by Black Damp, but apparently he still thought he was in the airway and pushed on without a light, dropping his tools but retaining possession of his lamp. He fell and became unconscious at a point 24 yards beyond the fence which he had passed. He was not missed until 7 o'clock next morning.
