Details of Event
The third [fatal explosion of firedamp], at Meiklehill Colliery occurred on 27th September, and was caused by one of a party of four miners striking a match to light his pipe. Safety lamps were in use. After the explosion two tobacco pipes and a spent match were found lying at the roadhead, and in three articles of clothing belonging to separate men loose unused matches were found.
