- Details of Event
- A small shaft had been sunk to a depth of 11 yards, and deceased and his mate were charging a hole 2.5 feet deep with compressed gunpowder. One pound of gunpowder had been inserted, and while pushing another bobbin into the hole the charge exploded. The hole was of triangular cross sections, having been hand drilled. They were using a wooden rammer at the time and probably a piece of grit had got between the aide of the cartridge and the side of the hole and too much force had been applied. The previous cartridges had gone into the hole without any trouble, but the hole was probably rather too small.
