- Inspection made and inquest attended. Four sinker were descending the upcast shaft in a hoppit which was in the process of being deepened when suddenly at a point about thirty yards from the top the engineman by some mistake reversed the action and was winding the hoppit past the stage at pit top slowly when the deceased in attempting to jump on to the stage fell down the shaft a distance of three hundred and fifty yards and was killed. The engineman at the inquiry stated he lost his head and that he had been on duty thirteen hours. It was recommended for the Company to introduce safetyhooks and adopt the eight-hour shift for the enginemen the same as the sinkers.
