- Details of Event
- Died October 22. On a day when the pit was not working a locomotive engine and train was coming from the public railway into the colliery sidings, and deceased, who was moving about doing odd jobs, lifted a points lever to direct the engine into a particular line of rails; he was seen to do this by the engine driver who, however, noticed nothing unusual, but according to deceased's statement to a labourer the same day the lever had slipped and struck him on the left thigh. The leg commenced to pain him and he was absent from work on the 20th Sept. he worked on the 21st Sept. and then worked no more. On the 21st Sept. he saw a doctor, who found the thigh swollen; an abscess developed which was drained in the usual way but he eventually died from exhaustion. He was in indifferent health at the time of the accident. The jury found that death resulted from the effects of a blow from a lever.
