He was the last person to enter the cage, and the onsetter rapped tile cage away with his right hand and was in the act of putting the fencing chain across the shaft with his left when the hook at the end of the chain caught in the lad's clothes. The onsetter was unable to get the hook free and at once rapped "hold" and the cage was promptly stopped, but not before the point guide had inflicted a terrible injury to the lad's leg from which he died the following day. After the accident a link was substituted for the hook at the end of the chain.
