- Details of Event
- Deceased ordinarily employed as a deputy but was engaged at the time of the accident as a hewer in the Main Coal seam at a pit recently opened. He worked at the face of a rolleyway place 6ft wide which was being driven through old pillars, and had advanced 55 yards from the shaft. He had holed into an old bord when a triangular shaped stone 3 feet at the base next the bord and about 4 inches thick fell from the roof on him, relieved by fissures obscured by a brat above the coal sticking to the roof. He showed lack of judgement in not having better supported by timber there was a sufficient supply of timber was under the stone that fell the nearest prop being 6 feet from the face. The Local Inspectors made no report.
