Deceased and others were on a ledge 7ft. 3ins. broad, and had holed a face of overburden 7ft. in height, to a depth of 24ft., and for a length of 15ft. Three ribs, each 15-18 ins. wide, had been left as supports, but proved insufficient. The clay came away suddenly, crushing the supports, and one piers knocked deceased over the ledge as he was trying to escape. He fell on the rails on the quarry floor and. sustained injuries to which he succumbed four days later.
