In endeavouring to get out of the way of a journey of 30 full trams, which were out of control, and were approaching the pit bottom at a considerable speed, deceased attempted to jump across the shaft but failed and fell between the cage bearers, 15ins. apart, from the four feet to the nine feet seam, a distance of about 45 yards. There was a manhole on each side of the parting at the spot and into which deceased could have got. Cross pieces have since been fastened on the cage bearers to prevent anyone falling through.
