- Details of Event
- His work was to attend to the nut waggons, but at the time of the accident he was sitting on one of the rails of the nut coal line, chopping a piece of wood. Unfortunately, he was sitting close in front of a ten-ton wagon loaded with ashes. Owing to the noise of the screening machinery, he failed to hear the approach of three empty stone bogies which a fireman was lowering down on the same line of rails. The stone bogies in collided with the standing waggon owing to the breakage of a sprag and subsequent failure of the fireman to stop the bogies, and owing to the collision the ten-ton waggon was pushed forward about 2 yards and passed over Richard's leg. He died the same night from the injuries he received.
