Details of Event
His work was to attend to the nut waggons, but at the time of the accident he was sitting on one of the rails of the nut coal line, chopping a piece of wood. Unfortunately, he was sitting close in front of a ten-ton wagon loaded with ashes. Owing to the noise of the screening machinery, he failed to hear the approach of three empty stone bogies which a fireman was lowering down on the same line of rails. The stone bogies in collided with the standing waggon owing to the breakage of a sprag and subsequent failure of the fireman to stop the bogies, and owing to the collision the ten-ton waggon was pushed forward about 2 yards and passed over Richard's leg. He died the same night from the injuries he received.
