He was superintending the putting on of a new rope on to the drum of a winding engine. Four slack dead coils had been put on to the drum and were suspended by a stout hemp rope to a balk above the drum. It was necessary to move the drum round inside the loose coils, so as to set the other cage into the correct position when the four dead coils were on the drum. He gave the order to move the engine, but the drum had moved half a revolution before the rope end socket came round, and passing through the loop of hemp rope, struck him on the head. He was found lying unconscious outside the fence and remained so until he died on the following day.
