The deceased was taking up some slack in a signal wire, by which signals were transmitted by him to the winding engineman, and to do this, it was necessary to be in the shaft, and while doing so he, without being aware of the fact, gave a signal to the engineman and the cage was lowered on the top of and crushed him very severely. There were pumps working in the shaft and the noise made by them probably prevented his hearing the approach of the cage.
