- Deceased was employed as a miner in a small hematite mine but there were no empty wagons forward he was directed by the foreman to cut down some elm trees growing within yards of the mine mouth and which were being buried with debris from the mine and an adjacent quarry. He cut down one small tree and then attacked another 15 ins. diameter which assisted] by a labourer he had cut two-thirds through with a two-handed cross-cut saw when the stem split up and the tree broke off about 14 feet up from and pinned him to the ground and he died two hours afterwards. The Jury added a rider to their verdict that accidental death that the work of cutting down trees should be carried out by men who understood the work.
