Deceased had just come into the place and was preparing to begin work at the corner of a pillar in the Bullhurst Seam, when without any warning, a piece of top coal 2ft. 6ins. thick, 9ft. long and about 3ft. 6ins. wide fell from two parallel slips which converged upwards. The roof was supported by bars 9ft. long and set 4ft. apart. The coal which fell was supported solely by one of these bars which was reeled by the fall. Deceased was struck by the end of the fall and received injuries from which he died on the following day.
