When at the 120 fathom level hearing what he probably thought to be the cage or gig descending he stepped into the skip road either to examine the cage as it passed or to speak to the occupants. It was however the skip which was being lowered and not the cage or gig. This caught and crushed him against the shaft side and killed him.
