He and two other lads had to come up a place with empty tubs and were standing resting in the end of a cross-gate when, without any warning, a piece of rock fell from the roof from between two weight breaks and killed him on the spot. The roof was so hard that no part of the cross-gate is timbered but for a radius of three or four yards it had become moist, and afterwards quite wet and this no doubt caused the stone to fall from between the breaks.
