- Details of Event
- Sinking pit. He was standing in front of the smoke box of a locomotive which was taking 10 loaded rubbish waggons down a gradient varying from 1 in 25 to 1 in 40. The train ran wild, owing to greasy rails, probable defect in the apparatus for supplying the sand, and the heavy weight of the train. The train crashed into a block at the siding end, crushing Price between the waggon and engine. Four men on the engine jumped off. Total weight of waggons was 160 tons and weight of engine 22 tons. The locomotive was clearly too light for the work.
