Deceased and 28 other persons were being lowered down the shaft and when about 88 yards from the bottom the cage struck a cast iron water garland curb which caused it to tilt up and deceased fell out. On inspection being made the shaft and appliances were found to be in good order and it is difficult to say what caused the cage to oscillate sufficiently to strike the curb as there was a clearance of 19 ins. 2 killed.
