- Lifting a piece of binn dirt to throw into pack, it broke in his hands, left hand borne down so that the back caught sharp edge of a stone lying on the floor cutting knuckle joint of little finger, never again worked, blood poisoning set in, spreading through the whole body. Died 3rd June. Doctor at inquest suggested cleaning of all slight wounds at the colliery with diluted carbolic.
