- Details of Event
- While a main journey was starting for the pit bottom, another rope belonging to a different haulage was also attached to the last train, in order to pull it back about 20 yards. The rider had signalled to the engineman to slack out, but owing to the signal wires having been damaged, no signal was received. The rope came away from the cup because of the increased tension, and in springing back, struck Powell, who was on his way out, causing fatal injuries.
