- Head came into contact with bar while riding. After finishing his work at 2.20 on Tuesday afternoon, he proceeded on his sledge for a distance of a mile to the bottom of the rope road, where he was joined by the deceased, and another miner named John Thomas Tattersall. The three got in a coal tub, and had travelled some 400 or 500 yards in the direction of the pit shaft, when the deceased's head came into contact with a coupling in the roof of the main haulage road. At the time of the accident the deceased was in a kneeling position in the front part of the tub, and he was thrown over the witness. The tub left the lines, and instructions were at once given for the rope which draws the tubs to be stopped. Afterwards, the deceased was taken to the pit top. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death. (Accrington Observer).
