- 15 February 1929: Death Follows Amputation - Crossgates Youth's Fatal Accident - As the result of an accident on 8th February, John Potter, jun, apprentice engineer, Main Street, Crossgates, died in the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh. At the time he received his accident, deceased was working at the pithead handling steel props, when one of the props fell, crushing the fingers of his left hand. His hand was dressed at the Ambulance station at the pithead, and again by Dr Rifkind, who a few days later ordered his removal to the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, to have the fingers amputated. Following upon this amputation, tetanus set in, resulting in death the following day. The funeral took place to Dunfermline Cemetery on Monday. Wreaths were placed on his grave by his associates in the Miners' Welfare Institution, and members of Mossgreen Parish Church Bible Class. Great sympathy is extended in the district to Mr and Mrs Potter, in the loss of their only son. [Dunfermline Journal 23 February 1929]
(RCE states accident occurred in Dalbeath Colliery)
