Deceased was on his way to work and was crossing the railway to mount some steps to the level, when, the ground being hard and slippery, owing to frost, he slipped and fell, breaking his leg. The bone not united after several weeks, he went to the Sunderland Infirmary where the leg was opened and a metal plate inserted. He returned home convalescent with the surgeon's wound still under treatment erysipelas set in, followed by septic absorption, and he died on 7th May.
