- He was in charge of the bottom of the pit while the hitcher was having dinner. As he and others were putting two trams in the cage a piece of coal appears to have fallen from the surface and struck his head. He died on the way home. This is a constantly recurring source of accident due to the system of loading trams in the South Wales Coal field.
