- Details of Event
- A fall of roof had taken place during the night in a headway 9 feet wide, close to a lift in broken workings in the Low Main seam in which two hewers worked. Deceased who was the fore. shift deputy discovered the fall when making his inspection before the hewers came in and directed the two hewers from the lift to clear it away. He returned to inspect the work when a second fall occurred over practically the same area as the first one and he was buried, and one of the hewers was also injured. The second fall was 14 feet long 3 feet wide and 16 inches thick and was relieved by a slip crossing the place diagonally, and which was visible after the first fall. There was a row of props along the centre of the headways and the falls came away between them and the coal side, and directly over the tub rails. Some want of judgement was shown in not supporting the stone by props set on the debris of the first fall. The ordinary seam props were not long enough but longer timber could have been obtained at the flat. The Local Inspectors reported 'that it was a pure accident.'
