He was enlarging a manhole on No.4 level and was found by his driver lying on his back at the manhole. A stone had fallen from the roof upon his head, and it is surmised that he had weakened the support of it by working the ground beneath it. The place had been visited by the deputy shortly before who bed instructed him how to take the stone down.
