He was temporarily doing the work of another haulage boy whose duty was to take off the clamps at the top of an endless rope incline and let the tubs run down to the shaft bottom by gravity. He failed to unfasten the clamp of a set of five tubs and instead of stopping the rope he tried to unhook the chain while the set was in motion and did not notice some tubs which were standing in front of him and his head was crushed between them and the moving tubs.
