- Details of Event
- The deceased and his father were deputies on alternate shifts. Owing to the mine being small with comparatively few hands at work, deceased did some stonework during each shift in a stone heading that was being driven over some old gobbing. Some holing had been done in the gobbing dirt during his previous shift, but no sprags had been set. Some 26 hours afterwards he was about to put in a shot hole and to ascertain how far an open break extended in the stone, he put his head under the holing to look, when a large piece of stone fell on it, causing injuries to which he succumbed on the 23rd of February. Nothing whatever had been done in the heading during the interval of 26 hours.
