- Details of Event
- Fell 53 yards down shaft from Yard to Florida mouthing and killed. We are obliged to Judith Rogerson for adding the following "He died 7th May, 1941 in number 2 shaft at Bold Colliery. He was 17 years old, he lived at 43 New Street, Platt Bridge, Wigan and was a sinker. He was killed as a result of falling from the cage, down the shaft, owing to the side of the cage being removed to allow repair work to the shaft to be carried out. A verdict of misadventure was reached at the Coroners court 9th May 1941. The further tragedy was that his father, my grandfather Thomas Henry Phillips and my Uncle Dennis Barker were tasked to retrieve his broken body".
