- Details of Event
- He and his labourer had gone to the 75 fathom level to repair a pump. On leaving the cage they had to pass through the pumping compartment, the sollar of which had been taken up to permit of machinery being lowered to a lower level. In place of the complete sollar, there was a temporary platform consisting of three planks fixed close to the cage, hut this left an opening 1 foot 9 inches wide. Phillips stepped from the cage on to the platform and then fell through the opening, a distance of 173 fathoms. The labourer said they were warned as they left the surface that this sollar was partly open. It would have been an easy matter to have completed the sollar, and so have avoided the accident.
