While standing on a temporary sea drilling a hole, below the 338 fathom level east of Stray Park shaft a stone fell from about 18 inches above his head and striking him in the face fractured the optic plate of his right eye. He was operated upon and subsequently seemed to improve but finally gradually fell back and died on the 3 June, 1905, from inflammation of the brain.
