- Details of Event
- A winze was being sunk below the adit level. At this top was a roll worked by two men. On the roll was a wire rope ending in a hook at each extremity attached to each loop was a spring hook. The underground captain noticed that the spring in each of these hooks was faulty, and had two shackles made to take their place. He ordered the men to take these shackles into the mine and to put them on in place of the spring hooks. After working two shifts with the spring hooks subsequent to receiving the above order, the men took off the best spring hook and put on a shackle. The captain saw the apparatus working in this condition and did nothing more than remonstrate with the men. The same evening a bucket, when being wound up the winze, became detached from the spring hook, and falling, struck Bond and killed him.
