Details of Event
18 June 1932: Fatal Pit Accident - James Petrie (57), Pit Bottomer, Blairmains Cottages, Blairlogie, died in Stirling Royal Infirmary on Saturday as a result of injuries sustained the previous day when working at the pit bottom in No.3 pit, Manor Powis Colliery. Petrie was in the act of raising the safety gate at the shaft bottom when he was seen to stumble and fall into the cage well. At that moment the cage was descending, and Petrie, unable to get clear, was severely crushed internally and had his right leg fractured. [Scotsman 20 June 1932] Shaft Accidents - One onsetter was killed at Manor Powis Colliery, Stirlingshire, on June 17, by inadvertently falling under the descending cage as it was landing at the pit bottom. He was raising the sliding gate at the time and there was nothing to indicate that anything had fallen down the shaft to stun him. [From Inspector of Mines Report for 1932]
