- Deceased was testing the condition of the roof in a gate road in the Thick Coal by sounding it with a pike, when a bump occurred mid about 30 cwts of coal was released from the roof immediately over his head. He was completely buried and severely injured, and died on the same day. The cavity from which the coal fell was oval in shape, 9ft. long, 3ft. wide, and 3ft. 10ins. high, and was surrounded by several converging black glassy slips which were previously invisible.
