Details of Event
Deceased and three other shifters about the beginning of an extra half shift they intended to work were engaged in shooting down top stone in a cross gateway and stowing it in longwall workings in the Yard seam. They had fired a gunpowder shot and were retiring from it along the face intending to take some refreshment in an adjoining gateway where they would be clear of the smoke but probably owing to the smoke deceased missed his way and continued along the face past the gateway, when a mass of ramble 7 feet long and 2 feet deep fell upon him from the face and above the coal. It was relieved by a parting above and a back behind and fell near a 2-feet hitch. The charge man and master shifter had both been past the place during the shift before the accident and had not noticed any danger. The Local Inspectors reported ‘in our opinion it has been a clear accident no one being in any way to blame.'
