- Details of Event
- Although naked lights ate allowed at the working face, a permitted explosive, abbcite, is used. The officials carry the explosive and detonators and deliver them to the workers when going their rounds, who charge and stem the shot holes. The shot-firer handed out to the deceased a charge and a detonator for his shot and also to another stallman a charge for a shot he had ready a dozen yards from the deceased's. Both shot-holes were placed in the coal near the floor. Holing is done in top of the seam. The shot-firer gave to the latter stallman the cable to couple up to the shot-wires, while he himself paid out t he cable into the gate road. After firing the shot the shot-firer, without leaving the gate, drew the cable further along it. The deceased caught hold of the end and coupled it up to his shot, and when he had finished, the shot-firer, without receiving any message from the deceased, turned the handle of the battery which fired the shot. The deceased received injuries to his head and chest, which killed him instantly. The shot-firer thought he heard someone shout, ‘When you are ready. It transpired at the inquest that the shot-firer had occasionally allowed the workers to couple up the cable to the shot-wires which was a distinct breach of the Explosives Order May 21st 1912, 2(e) and (g). Proceedings were taken against the shot-firer and a conviction obtained.
