A piece of 3-8 of an inch chain was used as a coupling between the second and third trams of a set of four in the "'journey" in place of the ordinary coupling, and on the trams being hauled up a gradient of 290 by an engine, the chain gave way at a knot made in it. The trams ran wild, and injured Payne who was acting as hitcher that day. He died from his injuries in three hours after he reached home.
