Details of Event
During the course of improving and enlarging the roads at the bottom of the A Pit a road 30 feet wide and 22 feet high was being arched with brick and two wood centres of 15 feet radius were in position placed 4 feet 9 inches apart the undersides or chord's of which were 5 inches clear of the tube passing underneath. These centres had been in position for some time and deceased had often driven under them he was going inbye with four empty tubs and was seen to get on to the limbers. When six yards from the nearest centre and when the pony started he appears to have raised his head and was caught by one of the centres. His cap was found in the first tub. The road is nearly level and was partially lighted by stationary lights at the pit bottom and in addition he had a lamp. As a precaution to prevent the recurrence of such an accident the lower parts of the centres were afterwards whitewashed. The Local Inspectors in their report after describing the place, concluded ‘we came to the conclusion that it was a pure accident.'
