- Details of Event
- This man was engaged feeding the coal out of the bunkers to the washed coal elevators. It is surmised - no one actually knows what occurred - that the elevators were not working quite properly and that the man went up the staircase into the engine house to see if anything was wrong. Presumably, he found that the belt driving the elevators was surging, and he attempted to tighten the belt by taking hold of it from the under side and pulling it down on to the pulley. The belt had then gone on at its normal speed suddenly, and had carried him on to the pulley between itself and the pulley. There was a fence, three feet high, around the pulley. The man was found fast on the pulley with his legs on the fencing, as though he had been standing on the fencing when taking hold of the belt.
